Art of Aristotle
Journal Entry: Fri Jul 6, 2007, 11:43 PM
At what point in our lives did mediocrity become the typical expression of humanity? When did 'work hard' become, 'work as hard as you feel like'? When did 'trying your best' get slid down to 'try if you want'? I find it almost comical that "At least you tried." has replaced, "Try harder." in the parental arsenal. When did parents give up on their children ever reaching further for what they could reach today?
Surely I wasn't around; I think I'd have noticed. Or maybe I wouldn't, another dismissal chalked up to the apathy of humanity. My mother told me that I should reach for my dreams. I believed her. Sometimes 'your best' isn't good enough and you should be able to realize that without having to sue whoever made that observation. But on the other hand, just because it wasn't this time, doesn't mean that the next time you reach it won't be good enough then. Failure is a stepping stone toward progress. Nothing could be created without a few failed attempts. Why do people no longer attempt to become better? Why is progression of the species no longer paramount?
"A mans reach must exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" How meaningless does that brilliant phrase by none other than Aristotle become if no one is willing to grasp? What does reaching matter if we aren't willing to make the effort
Because its, "Too hard"
And its, "Not worth it."
And its, "Unimportant."
When did what we dream 'become' unimportant? How? WHY? Who cares if it's too hard? Who cares if there is a veritable wall? Climb it, jump it, fucking tear the thing down brick by brick if you must. Make the effort. Why not? Why worry about who will be angry? Why worry about what stands in your way? Why worry about how difficult it will be to get there? If your own dreams aren't worth fighting for, than what is?
